A practical definition of EU small-scale fisheries: LIFE’s position
Defining small-scale fisheries has become a key policy issue, essential for ensuring fair access to resources, targeted funding, and proper representation of the sector.
LIFE supports the definition used under the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund: vessels under 12 metres using non-towed gears. This provides a clear and practical basis for implementing EU policies, including the Common Fisheries Policy.
A consistent definition is needed to apply Article 17 fairly, support the energy transition, and strengthen the role of small-scale fisheries in EU decision-making.
While alternative approaches exist, LIFE considers them less suitable for policymaking and calls for a simple, workable definition that delivers for fishers and coastal communities.
