11 Years Awaiting in Vain for a Fair Quota Allocation

 Once again Spain has turned its back on historic injustices by denying rights to small scale fishers in the Mediterranean to access Bluefin tuna.

Brussels, 14 February 2017

On 7 February, the  Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment, announced that the government had published its “Plans for the Fishery, Capacity, and Control of Bluefin tuna” and had fixed the allocation criteria for the reserve pool of quota for 2017.

This document does not correct in any way past mistakes and will continue benefiting the status quo: increasing the fishing possibilities of the very industrial fleets and overlooking – for another year – the Spanish small scale fisheries sector.

LIFE laments that the Spanish Government did not seize this golden opportunity to correct the historic errors and begin to promote a necessary and just balance that guarantees the survival and prosperity of the small-scale fleets, which provide so many social, economic and environmental benefits to coastal communities.

Plan de pesca 2017: 11 años de espera en vano por tener acceso a la pesquería de Atún rojo
España da la espalda una vez más a las injusticias históricas, negando el derecho de acceso de pesca dirigida a los pescadores de pequeña escala del Mediterráneo

Bruselas, 14 febrero 2017

El pasado 7 de febrero de 2017 del Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca Alimentación y Medio Ambiente, publicó un comunicado anunciando que el Gobierno español ha presentado los “Planes de Capacidad, Pesca e Inspección de atún rojo” y ha fijado los criterios de reparto del fondo de maniobra para 2017.

Este documento no corrige ningún error del pasado y seguirá beneficiando al “Status quo”: incrementando las posibilidades de pesca de las propias flotas industriales y ignorando -un año más- al sector pesquero de pequeña escala español, especialmente en el Mediterráneo.

LIFE lamenta que el Gobierno no tomase esta oportunidad de empezar a corregir estos errores históricos, reconocer al sector artesanal y empezar a fomentar un equilibrio necesario y justo que garantizase la supervivencia y prosperidad de las flotas de pequeña escala que proporcionan tantos beneficios sociales, económicos y ambientales a las comunidades costeras.
