{"id":9260,"date":"2017-12-08T08:38:43","date_gmt":"2017-12-08T08:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lifeplatform.eu\/?p=9260"},"modified":"2018-02-01T13:55:45","modified_gmt":"2018-02-01T13:55:45","slug":"fishy-business-fish-pos-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeplatform.eu\/ma\/fishy-business-fish-pos-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Fishy Business: Fish POs in the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9264\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeplatform.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/LIFE-LOGO-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lifeplatform.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/LIFE-LOGO.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lifeplatform.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/LIFE-LOGO-978x756.jpg 978w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><u>Press Release \u2013 for immediate release<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Fishy Business: Fish POs in the EU<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>How the failure to properly recognise and regulate the EU\u2019s fish producer organisations [POs] is failing the Common Fisheries Policy and smaller-scale fishermen and what should be done to resolve it.<\/p>\n<p>There is increasing interest amongst the small scale coastal fishers (SSCF) of Europe [80% by number of the overall EU fleet] in the possible benefits to them of creating small scale fisher specific producer organisations.<\/p>\n<p>This would be good news for all parties interested in achieving the CFP\u2019s objectives as the regulations acknowledge that POs are \u201cthe key\u201d to achieving those objectives\u201d and Europe\u2019s small scale coastal fishers represent a large majority of all Europe\u2019s fishers.<\/p>\n<p>LIFE commissioned this report <strong>to determine whether the regulations and structure that Europe\u2019s SSCF would be signing up to are fit for purpose, open, fair and equitable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report makes clear<strong> the need for the Commission and the Member States to take action<\/strong> to ensure that the conditions for recognition of producer organisations and inter-branch organisations laid down in Articles 14 and 16 of the Common Organisation of the Markets Regulation respectively are complied with.<\/p>\n<p>Their continued failure to do so is a direct threat to the key objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy and the Common Organisation of the Markets.<\/p>\n<p>We urge the Commission to<strong> carry out an urgent review of its Member States\u2019 POs\u2019 compliance<\/strong> and to consider our recommendations, which are intended to constructively propose ways to address the current regulatory system\u2019s failure.<\/p>\n<p>Note for Editors: The Low Impact Fishers of Europe platform [LIFE] is an organisation of organisations of small scale commercial fishermen across Europe, run by fishermen, for fishermen.
