{"id":19980,"date":"2023-02-01T15:54:14","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T15:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeplatform.eu\/?p=19980"},"modified":"2023-02-01T16:01:56","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T16:01:56","slug":"life-calls-for-a-revision-of-the-baltic-sea-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeplatform.eu\/ma\/life-calls-for-a-revision-of-the-baltic-sea-map\/","title":{"rendered":"LIFE calls for a revision of the Baltic Sea MAP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This month, the European Parliament held a <a href=\"https:\/\/multimedia.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/webstreaming\/committee-on-fisheries_20230123-1500-COMMITTEE-PECH\">hearing<\/a> on the status of the Multiannual Plan (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishsec.org\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Baltic-MAP-final.pdf\">MAP<\/a>) for the Baltic Sea.\u00a0Stakeholders from the region were invited to share their point of view and concerns, including\u00a0LIFE\u00a0who was represented by a presentation on small-scale fishermen in the Baltic Sea by Katarzyna Stepanowska. She gave details of the decline of Eastern Baltic cod in the region, which has been ongoing for decades.<\/p>\n<p>At the hearing, it became clear that stakeholders consider the MAP, adopted in 2016 to manage cod, herring and sprat sustainably, to be a failure. Jarek Zieli\u0144ski, chair of the BSAC (Baltic Sea Advisory Council), said BSAC members supported a reform of the management plan. Cathrine Pedersen Schirmer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dn.dk\/home\/english-page\/\">Danish Society for Nature Conservation<\/a> argued that all three legislative objectives of the MAGP had not been implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, MAP has failed to adequately protect small-scale fishermen, who make up over 90% of the fleet in terms of number of vessels and provide 65% of jobs at sea, but receive only 7% of the catch. \u00a0To make matters worse, 90 % of the fish biomass extracted from the Baltic Sea is destined for industrial processing, mainly as fishmeal and fish oil for animal feed.<\/p>\n<p>Vesa Tschernij from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simrishamn.se\/om-kommunen\/marint-centrum\">Simrishamn Municipality Marine Centre<\/a>, Sweden, pointed out the stark contrast between food fishing and reduction fishing, noting that eleven times more fish are needed to generate the same income from reduction fishing.<\/p>\n<p>Against this background, LIFE calls for a revision of the Baltic Sea MAP to include a cod recovery plan and measures for the management of plaice and flounder, which have become important but were not included in the original version of MAP.<\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-19980\" data-postid=\"19980\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-19980 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month, the European Parliament held a hearing on the status of the Multiannual Plan (MAP) for the Baltic Sea.\u00a0Stakeholders from the region were invited to share their point of view and concerns, including\u00a0LIFE\u00a0who was represented by a presentation on small-scale fishermen in the Baltic Sea by Katarzyna Stepanowska.
