Thanks to several initiatives aimed at giving small-scale fishers a say in this landmark process,\u00a0<b>small-scale fisher representatives were able to come together and participate in the \u201cGreen Paper\u201d consultation process in 2009 and 2010, and to form alliances with many like minded organizations.\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><b>Together they\u00a0<\/b><strong>called for those who fish in the most sustainable manner to be granted priority access to fishery resources<\/strong>, and for a fair reallocation of fishing rights to smaller scale fishers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.entry-content -->\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.timeline-content -->\n\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.timeline-content-wrap -->\n\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t<li Councils<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>THIRD EUROPEAN ARTISANAL FISHERMEN\u2019S CONGRESS<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIFE organises the Third Congress of European Artisanal Fishers in Warsaw, bringing representatives from all its member organizations together. LIFE becomes a founder member of the <strong>\u201cFriends of Small-scale Fisheries\u201d<\/strong> in GFCM, a group committed to supporting the implementation of the RPOA-SSF.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of 2018, Brexit made it imperative for LIFE to shift to an EU Member State and to close its UK operations. The support is for partnership initiatives, linking LIFE to other MAVA partners in two strategic initiatives:\u00a0 \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodnected.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Foodnected<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, towards a fair and sustainable food system in the Mediterranean\u201d; and \u201cEmpowering the legacy: scaling up <\/span><b>co-managed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and financially sustainable <\/span><b>No-Take Zones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \/ Marine Protected Areas\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>STEWARDS OF THE BALEARIC SEA<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIFE becomes a partner of the <\/span><b>Marilles-fonden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to work in the Balearic Islands over a 3-year period. LIFE\u2019s role is to engage with SSF associations and promote their integration into protected area initiatives and associated co-management initiatives and to promote the direct sale of their products. The initiative is linked to LIFE\u2019s partnership with MAVA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>5 YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN DRAFTED<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LIFE finalises drafting a 5-year strategic plan, based on a long process of review. The plan commits LIFE to uniting fishers to achieve fair fisheries, healthy seas and vibrant communities. Towards achieving these goals, LIFE developed a theory of change as part of the plan. The strategic plan is reviewed by LIFE\u2019s Board of Directors in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>BLUEFIN TUNA IN COURT<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A landmark legal ruling in a French court finds in favor of LIFE\u2019s French members and partners, and against the French rules for <\/span><b>allocating Bluefin Tuna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fishing quotas.
